Roughly twice the size of Texas, South Africa varies from the picturesque Garden Route towns of the Western Cape to the raw subtropical coast of northern KwaZulu-Natal. The vast Karoo semi-desert stretches across its heart and one of Africa’s premier safari destinations, Kruger National Park, is in the northeast. Johannesburg does not forget its apartheid past: Constitution Hill, MuseuMAfricA and the Hector Pieterson Memorial & Museum all document the long walk to political freedom with compelling displays.

Soweto is the largest of South Africa’s “townships” and lies just south of Johannesburg. Here you can experience a traditional shebeen, and visit the homes where Nobel laureates Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu once lived.

North east of Johannesburg and about the size of Israel, the Kruger Park is the greatest of South Africa’s many national parks giving visitors the best chance of spotting the Big Five (elephant, lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo).   In Cape Town the summit of Table Mountain offers you some of South Africa’s most breathtaking views.   A short cruise from Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront by ferry, Robben Island is where Nelson Mandela and his comrades were imprisoned for decades during the Apartheid era.

The Cape Winelands are located just outside the city of Cape Town and are home of many wonderful South African wine estates.

You can watch whales doing acrobatics or come up close and personal with the world’s largest concentration of great white sharks.  From Cape Town along the coast to the Tsitsikamma Forest, The Garden Route stretches through small towns, wineries, farms and sea villages.  South African beaches are among the best in the world, boasting 1900 miles of coastline.
